LUCKY US -- A LIBRARY!
Written by Melissa mack maruska, President, Friends of the Cochranton Area Public Library
The Cochranton Area Public Library (CAPL) is a small rural library tucked in behind the main street of Cochranton, PA. While small and rural may bring to mind “quaint” and “country” to some, I have come to understand that those words hardly define this little library.
Recently, I have spent quite a few hours at CAPL as a book club member, volunteer and as an active member of the Friends of the Library group. This involvement has taken me beyond my own wants and needs as a library patron and has allowed me to witness firsthand what the library means to others and to the community as a whole.
On any given day, I might find students browsing information for school projects, teachers gathering materials for their classes, young parents searching the catalog for helpful parenting guides or rainy day activities to do with their children. Some come just to enjoy a few quiet moments to read or study. The unemployed come looking for help wanted ads in a variety of newspapers or using online resources to help with resume development or coursework to increase a skill set. With the library’s subscription to Ancestry.com patrons are researching their family history using any one of the five computer stations available. With the library’s free internet service, patrons (especially those who do not have computers or internet access at home) are setting up e-mail accounts, using word processing programs or preparing presentations. And all the while, our librarians are availing themselves to help users through any unfamiliar territory they may encounter.
Our youngest patrons might be taking advantage Toddler Time on Tuesdays. During June, July and August, children of all ages will be actively engaged in the (free) Summer Reading Program which provides reading material, crafts and snacks to 80+ participants. Teen volunteers are manning the circulation desks, mentoring little ones, or helping with library sponsored activities. Many of these youths participate in the summer Lunch Bunch group that meet over lunch once a week to discuss the latest and greatest in teen literature.
And while the CAPL staff is busy with the administration of the library including new acquisitions to the physical and digital collection as well as to the details associated with the new building, the facility is host to a number of pursuits for other community members. The Community Room accommodates the meetings of several organizations with additional rooms used for technology classes, a chess club, and tutoring. The Friends have used the library for quite a few of their events including the Used Book Sale, Plant Sale and the Christmas in July store all of which were designed to raise funds and awareness regarding the library and its services.
The Cochranton Area Public Library gathers people together for a variety of reasons regardless of wealth, gender, race, creed or education and allows them to grow together as a community, to be involved with and for their community. Creating and sustaining healthy, democratic communities is what public libraries do best—aren’t we lucky?
