Cochranton Returns to Traditional Memorial Day Services (2023)
The Cochranton American Legion Post 836 announced that the Memorial Day Observance to be held at the Cochranton Cemetery at 10 AM will include the annual parade. The parade, forms at the Cochranton Area Public Library and proceeds up Adams Street to the cemetery, starting at 9:30.
The main speaker for the service is be Cochranton resident and Vietnam Veteran Stephen Carroll. The program will include patriot readings, including Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Joyce Kilmer’s World War I poem, “In Flanders Field”. Music will be offered by the Cochranton High School Marching Band and a special choral selection by the Cochranton’s Women Club.
Special guests for the event include members of the 150th Pennsylvania “Bucktail” Brigade and World War II historian, Pat Emig. The Cochranton Heritage Society has provided a self-guided tour of the resting places of those local residents that were Killed in Action. A display of military “Honor Rolls” pays homage to the local residents that have served during the nation’s wars. The ceremony will conclude with the final roll-call of recent interred veterans and the traditional rifle salute and taps.
In the event of inclement weather, the observance will be moved to the Cochranton Jr. Sr. High School at 10 AM.

Memorial Day Weekend in Cochranton (2022)
Cochranton will have a weekend of activities leading up to the annual Memorial Day observance held at the Cochranton Cemetery.
The community will have its annual garage / yard sales on Friday and Saturday, along with the monthly Flea Market at the Cochranton Fairgrounds on River Street. The Cochranton Area Public Library will have its annual book sale, plant sale and rummage sale at the library on Pine Street both days from 9-4. An All-you-can-eat donation pancake breakfast will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Smith Street from 8AM to 11AM, Saturday morning.
On Sunday, a new event, a Community Church Services will be held in Lions Community Park in the main pavilion. The service will be conducted by the Cochranton Ministerial Association and will include local musicians. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs with the service beginning at 10:30. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the accommodations at the park.
The Memorial Day Observance at the Cochranton Cemetery will begin at 10 AM. Due to scheduling conflicts there will not be a parade. The ceremony will be conducted by the James L. Steen American Legion Post 836 of Cochranton. This marks the seventy-sixth year for the annual event. The featured speaker will be SFC William Earl Marceau III. The eighteen year veteran of the United States Army Infantry has served two combat tours to Iraq. He served as part of Operation Phantom Fury, the second battles of Falucia and Mosul. Marceau is a member of the Army Reserve. Also included in the annual program will be patriotic readings and music.
On display at the cemetery are honor rolls of local veterans from the Revolutionary War through the Korean conflict. A self-guided tour is available to visit the graves of the Cochranton Veterans that were killed in action and the resting places of the former mayors of the Borough of Cochranton.
